HCCI issue statement in response to Irish Times Article

Following last nights edition of Primetime and the front page article in yesterday’s Irish Times “Absence of homecare inspection puts elderly at risk” Private Home Care supports the HCCI and the statement they released today.

"The worrying news today of complaints about the Heal...th Service Executive's home help services highlights the vulnerable position of older people in the absence of a robust regulatory and inspection regime."

"Recent internal HSE investigations have shown serious issues around the delivery of home help hours by section 39 funded organisations and yet these organisations still receive state funding. The issue with a lot of home help delivery is that there is a lack of choice for the patients and as such no transparency in the way that service is delivered."

"We are committed to highest standards of care for older people, and have called on the Government for years to regulate the sector to ensure older people in Ireland are protected from abuse, and receive the quality of care they so deserve."

"The lack of progress on regulation is not acceptable, and the reality is that it takes a scandal like Leas Cross or the footage of RTÉ's crèche investigation last week to prompt political action."

"The majority of Home and Community Care Ireland clients are elderly and promoting awareness of the risks many elderly people face, and how to combat elder abuse is incredibly important to HCCI."

“It is vitally important that HIQA is given the statutory powers to regulate all areas of the home care sector as a matter of urgency. In the absence of State regulation HCCI requires its members to adhere to a code of conduct based on international best practice guidelines. Unfortunately, this is not the case for all operators, and that is why legislation is so urgently required.”
