Palliative Care Course Outline

The QQI Palliative Care Course is 4 day module which is available only for Private HomeCare carers. If you are interested in working with us, please visit our recruitment page. Once approved by us to become a carer, you can join any of our courses immediately!

The course is broken into four days of training to cover the following topics:

  • Day 1 of 4: Working with a palliative care approach.
  • Day 2 of 4: Communications skills for staff with direct contact with residents/clients and/or families. Listening and communication skills are needed to achieve quality personalised palliative care at the end of life.
  • Day 3 of 4: Death and dying; total pain control, fatigue management, nausea and vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, sore mouth/dry mouth, swallowing difficulties, breathlessness and delirium.
  • Day 4 of 4: Bereavement and loss; grief and bereavement, experiential model, transitions model (Cairns 2003), phases of grief, self care strategies, support systems in Ireland, right to die in Ireland-high profile court judgement (2013)

Day 2: 5th March 2020

Day 3: 12th March 2020

Day 4: 19th March 2020

Learning Outcomes

At the end of your palliative care training, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the philosophy and principles of palliative care.
  • Summarise the structure and organisation of palliative care services to include the role played by the multi-disciplinary team and diverse family structures in the provision of care for a terminally ill person.
  • Discuss the role of the support worker in the promotion of key issues such as life quality, self-esteem, respect, privacy and dignity in palliative care work.
  • Explore different attitudes to death and dying to include an understanding of individual patterns of grief, bereavement and loss.
  • Employ a range of communication strategies and processes which are central to the work in palliative care.
  • Apply a person-centered approach to caring for a person in the last days of their life to include the provision of supportive and holistic care promoting safety, dignity, respect and comfort
  • Respond appropriately to the needs of the person who is confused in the last days of life.
  • Work effectively and with great sensitivity in relation to the dying person and their significant others in a palliative care setting.
  • Use the range of skills required from a palliative support worker in relation to end of life care.


Duration

4 days spread across a number of weeks.


Location

Lucan Centre, Lucan, Dubiln. This is accessible by frequent public transport buses. Full details will be provided upon booking.


Cost

The cost is €195 per person for the entire course, including all training materials.
